    Red face

    Holy $hit!

This is more than I expected and maybe more than I want.

My setup: AEM cai, 96 GSR, JRSC w/6psi blower pulley, RSR 4-2-1 headers, stock cat, Greddy PE exhaust... AND a 1999 CRV Crank pulley. No AC belt installed. Fueling handled by Walbro GSS-342 pump, Cartech 20005 FPR, stock injectors.

First WOT run was woefully lean (only one green LED and I heard detonation).

Increased no vacuum FP from 72psi to 82psi. Idle is in the 50's. WOT is over 99psi. Restrictor removed from vacuum line to Cartech because bleeder is fully closed. I'm aiming for rich here, ya know?

Next WOT run, 1st gear rolling start. Holy $hit. Tires broke free like my snow tires in the winter!!! (Yoko AVSi on hot dry asphalt) Ran through 2nd gear. A/F is OK. One yellow LED is still lit at times, but 3 or 4 greens are also lit.

Now get this: Boost ==== 12psi!!!!!

This is more than I expected (want?).

Through more driving, I found that everything worked well. The car is A LOT faster.

Starting in 1st and continuing through the gears at WOT works fine.

Flooring it in 2nd at 3-4K rpm or so is a 100% gaurantee for tip-in detonation. Not much, but I'll try not to do this.

4th gear pull was a little leaner. The last yellow LED was lit fully, not flickering like in the other gears. Also, boost only went to 11psi (I didn't take it past 85mph).

I'm autocrossing it tomorrow. Hopefully the tip-in won't be too prevelant, but I'm concerned because auto-x is all 2nd gear, on and off the throttle.

When I drag race it, I'll keep an eye on the A/F to watch for going lean.

I was really only hoping for 10psi. If this mod makes my driving timid except for when I want 100%, I don't know what I'll do. I don't want to spend $320 on injectors right now.

    Over and out.

    Greg

I used to see similar results with my stock injectors, I'd be careful going that high of an RPM for too long. I also think that RSR header needs to go and be replaced with something like a Kamakazi. Raffe saw about what you're seeing (as he didn't go that high in the RPM range) so that's about what you should expect. At that point I'd also get a test pipe and make sure the collector on back is 2.5" to give the best power output. The boost is addicting, especially for us SC guys who struggle over 220 WHP, be careful with that fuel tuning man! redface). Listen to a melted piston expert, take your time =) and get upgraded injectors. I didn't notice them on your post above so just say if you already have them but the A/F readings look too lean IMHO.

Also keep in mind that pulley gives you 10 PSI not 12; you just need better exhaust upgrades. Larry and Raffe had mentioned that the size pulley would give 10 PSI not 12. Manifold pressure isn't positively showing cylinder pressure right? I'm sure Raffe can clarify this better than I can redface) (I always said that guy was a smart..ass). grin.

I'm already dreaming up ways to talk my wife into this one! (310 injectors, that is)

I know that 12psi is not "real", but I thought the CRV pulley was going to show 10psi on the boost gauge, like an "8psi" blower pulley.

I definitely want a straight pipe, but if I have to go to the doghouse for yet another car purchase, I think the injectors would make more of a difference.

I honestly don't know if I want to push my engine this hard.

Hey zip, you ever gonna sell that boost controller of your's? wink

    Greg,

The crank pulley you're using should yield the same results I'm getting. As to why the manifold pressure is so much higher on your ride, I don't know. Could be your gauge, different cam timing from mine, looser valve clearances, the blower itself...

Anyhow, *if* the formula which describes injector flow rate as a function of pressure actually applied to stock injectors at such high pressures, I'd need to run at least 110psi of fuel pressure to provide enough fuel with my current setup. That's sketchy at best.

Remember, at these boost levels, adequate fuel delivery is critical! If you think you're motor's running lean at all consider the fact that much worse damage can happen much faster!

If every thing goes as planned it may be released as early as Spring of next year before the racing season begins, when the boost controller makes its debut. Seems like you need larger injectors now, huh Greg? *Wink, wink* wink how about you join the groupbuy on the Venom injectors?

Groupbuy on injectors?? Details? Is this on the ones that can be re-sized for free during the first year? How much? Thanks. I tried looking on groupbuycenter and didnt see it.

Holden, I'd run and get the new JR BTC, and some larger injectors. Stock injectors at 12 psi is not really a good idea, especially without some control.

Good luck autocrossing, you'll find what I did, it makes very little on the autocross course, it's too much.

The engine was fine at the auto-x, but Mr. Holden's driving was not!

Like Lundgren said, the extra power made no difference. It comes down to driving and mine was lacking today.

I add NOS Octane Booster (for a hopefull net octane of 97) and iced the intake manifold between heats for extra insurance.

The engine performed fine. There was an occasion or two of tip-in detonation, but that was expected.

I pointed my video camera at my gauges on one run. You can't see A/F, but I'll tell you this: The Cartech regulator is FAST! I have the restrictor removed, and when I floored it, the FP went very quickly to 99psi (max of gauge).

The Boost gauge also goes to 12psi almost instantly.

The engine seems OK, but I have a "something for nothing" feeling. I feel like all this extra power I feel has got to be eroding something in the engine. We'll see. The pulley will probably come off and just stick around for special occasions like monthly autocrossing and trips to the strip.

I want my engine to live to 100K without a rebuild (at 51K now). I don't think using a CRV pulley is good for this goal!

Would you guys know if I can use a CRV pulley on my B16A?

I'm getting 8 psi boost using stock pulleys. Any idea on how much I'll get with the CRV pulley?

Finally, how much boost can our stock internals take, assuming the fuel mixture is correct?

    Thanks.
